Designing for People Behind the Screen
In today’s digital landscape, visuals and trendy interfaces often take center stage online, but effective UX/UI design demands much more than an aesthetic appeal. Instead, it’s about designing with people in mind, making experiences that not only look good but feel intuitive. Whether I’m designing for a website, mobile app, or social platform, I aim to create experiences that are thoughtful, seamless, and genuinely enjoyable for the user
“People ignore design that ignores people.” – Frank Chimero, designer & author
This quote has always stood out to me. As a designer, I’ve come to see UX/UI as the meeting point between structure and storytelling, where user needs, context, and behavior shape every decision. It’s not just about creating something visually appealing, but ensuring that the experience makes sense, feels natural, and supports the user at every step. I try to approach every project by asking: Who is this for, and how can I make it feel tailored to them?
How I Approach UX/UI Design
My process always starts with the user. Whether I’m building a concept or improving something that already exists, I begin by researching the audience to see exactly who they are, what they need, and what challenges they face. This helps me understand their mindset and sets the foundation for my process.
Once I understand the user, I focus on the digital flow. This includes mapping out informational architectures and wireframes to make sure the experience is clear and efficient. The user journey is mapped to anticipate the user’s next steps and expectations, identifying key moments of decision-making.
From there, I shift into the visual design stage where user experience is still at the center. I pay attention to visual hierarchy, contrast, consistency, and accessibility, so that every design decision supports usability. Whether it’s making buttons big enough to tap or writing clear copy, I try to design with kindness and clarity in mind.
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” –Steve Jobs
Putting It Into Practice
One of my favorite projects where I put this mindset into action was my conceptual UX/UI case study, Active Tails. I created a brand identity and responsive website for a smart pet collar concept—thinking through both the pet owner’s needs and how they might interact with the product online. It helped me explore the importance of user flow, device responsiveness, and friendly interactions that build trust.
My background in Computer Information Systems has helped me understand not only how things look, but how they function behind the scenes too and the overall importance of user experience.
As I continue growing as a designer, I know UX/UI will remain a central part of what I do. It pushes me to think critically, and put people first. At the end of the day, the best designs aren’t just beautiful, they’re useful, thoughtful, and human.
