5 Unforgettable Experiences from my Semester in NYC
This semester in New York City felt like one long creative sprint, but in the best way. Between working in a creative environment and spending my free time exploring everything the city has to offer, NYC became both my office and my classroom. Looking back, these are the five experiences that defined my time here.
1. Working at Tarte Cosmetics
Spending 14 weeks at tarte gave me hands-on exposure to what it’s really like to work inside a fast-paced beauty brand. From contributing to design projects to sitting in brainstorms and department overview sessions, I learned how ideas move from concept to execution, and how much collaboration it takes to get there. It was the kind of experience that sharpened both my creative and strategic thinking.
2. Visiting the L’Oréal Office
One of the most exciting moments this semester was visiting the L’Oréal office. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at another global beauty brand was incredibly inspiring and offered a new perspective on how large-scale creative and business teams operate. I left feeling energized, curious, and even more excited about the beauty and branding space.
3. Attending AdWeek
AdWeek was one of those moments where everything clicked. Sitting in rooms with industry leaders, listening to conversations about creativity, culture, branding, and the future of marketing reminded me why I’m drawn to this field in the first place. Beyond the panels, it was the conversations and connections that made the experience so valuable.
4. Exploring NYC’s Museums
From iconic institutions like The Met, MoMa and the Guggenheim to more niche museums like Poster House and the FIT museum, I spent so many weekends wandering through exhibits. Every visit felt like a creative reset, and a reminder of how powerful storytelling, design, and visual culture can be.
5. Finding Creativity at Every Corner
What surprised me most about NYC was how creativity exists everywhere, not just in offices or museums. From café branding and event concepts to experiential marketing pop-ups on random streets, inspiration was constant. Even more meaningful were the people: fellow interns, coffee chats, and even strangers on the train. I loved talking to other creatives and learning from their stories.
This semester reminded me that creativity thrives in community, curiosity, and conversation. I’m leaving NYC incredibly grateful and already excited for what’s next.
